Meghalaya was reduced to 2/6 during its Ranji Trophy match against defending champion Mumbai at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC Ground on Thursday.
After Mumbai elected to field, Shardul Thakur and Mohit Avasthi wreacked havoc to pick six wickets inside the first four overs of the match. In the previous over, Thakur had taken a hat-trick, dismissing Anirudh B, Sumit Kumar and Jaskirat off consecutive deliveries.
Meghalaya’s two for the loss of six wickets is the lowest team total at the fall of the sixth wicket in the history of the Ranji Trophy. It is also the second lowest such score in all First-Class cricket – Marylebone Cricket Club’s 0/6 in 8.2 overs against Surrey at Lord’s in 1872 being the lowest ever.
However, a 38-run partnership between Pringsang and Akash Kumar for the seventh wicket helped Meghalaya ride out the possibility of falling for the lowest score ever in the Ranji Trophy – Hyderabad’s 21 all out against Rajasthan in 2010.
Meghalaya was eventually bundled out for 86 in 24.3 overs, boosting Mumbai’s chances of registering a much-needed win with a bonus point.
Thakur finished with four for 43, while Avasthi picked three for 27. Sylvester Dsouza and Shams Mulani were also among the wickets.
