Australia vs India: Pycroft’s 100, Konstas phenomenon and Bumrah’s stranglehold

Pycroft’s 100!

4 The number of Match Referees who have officiated in over 100 Test matches during their career. In the Boxing Day Test match held in Melbourne, former Zimbabwean batter Andy Pycroft became the latest referee to reach this milestone. He joins three others in this exclusive group.

3 The number of Australian players younger than Sam Konstas to make their debut in a Test match. Konstas, in Melbourne, became the fourth youngest Aussie to make his debut in a Test match, at 19 years and 85 days. Konstas also became the youngest Australian to make his debut in a Test match involving India. He also became the second youngest Aussie debutant to register a fifty score and, overall, the third youngest to make a fifty-plus score while facing the first ball of the Test match.

2 The number of Indian batters below 23 years to register three-figure scores, while batting at #8 and lower. At 21 years and 217 days, Nitish Reddy joins former wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra in achieving this feat during his defiant century at the MCG on 28 December 2024. Reddy, meanwhile, became the youngest to achieve this in a Test match in Australia, in a list dominated by the players from the home team.

85 The number of bowlers with 200 or more wickets in a Test career. Jasprit Bumrah, in the Melbourne Test match on 29 January 2024, became the latest entrant to join this list of bowlers, with the wicket of Travis Head. He thus became the 12th Indian and sixth Indian pacer to achieve this landmark. Bumrah’s achievement is remarkable because he became the first bowler in Test cricket history to take 200 wickets with a bowling average of less than 20 runs. By reaching his 200th Test wicket in his 44th Test, he is now the quickest Indian pace bowler to reach this landmark. Kapil Dev, in 1983, needed 50 Tests. Among Indians, only R. Ashwin (37 Tests) has done it quickly. Ravindra Jadeja, too, needed 44 Tests, same as Bumrah, to 200 wickets. For the record, in terms of balls bowled, Bumrah (8484 deliveries) is the fourth-quickest in the history of Test cricket after Pakistani Waqar Younis (7725) and South Africans Dale Steyn (7848) and Kagiso Rabada (8153).

29 The number of balls Rishabh Pant needed to reach his 50th run in the second innings in Sydney. This performance now ranks as the second-fastest individual fifty for India in Test cricket, just missing his own record of 28 balls, which he set during the day-night Test against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in March 2022. Additionally, Pant’s fifty in Sydney stands as the second quickest by any batter against Australia in Test cricket history. The only player to have reached a fifty faster than Pant is Pakistani captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who accomplished the feat in just 21 balls during his unbeaten 101 in the second innings in Abu Dhabi on November 2, 2014.

24The number of bowlers who have taken 100 or more wickets for India in Test matches. Mohd Siraj, the latest entrant, reached this milestone during the Sydney Test match on January 5, 2025, when he dismissed Usman Khawaja in the second innings. With this accomplishment, Siraj became the 10th pace bowler to reach this significant landmark for India. However, although the milestone came in 36 Test matches, he still boasts the third-best strike rate of any Indian bowler in this regard, with only Jasprit Bumrah and Kapil Dev having a better bowling strike-rate when claiming their 100th Test wicket.

7The number of Indian bowlers who have claimed 32 or more wickets in a Test series. Jasprit Bumrah has recently joined this elite group. He is the second Indian paceman, after Kapil Dev, to achieve this milestone and the first to take this many wickets on an away tour. However, it is unfortunate that he is also the only Indian bowler to be part of a losing effort in such a series.
