Three enthusiastic fans barged into the field of play to get close to Virat Kohli during the third day of the Ranji Trophy match between Railways and Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.
The incident took place in the penultimate over before the lunch break when Kohli was fielding at cover. Delhi went on to wrap up the match shortly after the break, beating Railways by an innings and 19 runs inside three days.
Kohli’s return to the Ranji Trophy after almost 13 years gained a lot of attention as more than 12,000 fans turned up to watch the action unfold on the opening day of the match.
On day one, a similar incident had occurred when a fan touched Kohli’s feet, with the Indian superstar requesting the security officials to go easy on the intruder.
However, Kohli’s much-anticipated return to India’s premier First-Class tournament ended on a drab personal note as he was dimissed for just six runs off 15 balls on the second day. Kohli was clean bowled by Himanshu Sangwan, who sent his off-stump cartwheeling.
Kohli will link up with the Indian team for the One-Day International series against England, starting February 6 in Nagpur, followed by the ICC Champions Trophy from February 19.
He showed up for the Ranji Trophy fixture following a BCCI diktat, which made it mandatory to play domestic cricket whenever the international calendar allows.
