It’s time for the men’s singles final at the Australian Open 2025 and it will be a battle of the top 2 ranked players in tennis at the moment. The defending champion Jannik Sinner will go up against a well-improved Alexander Zverev, who is gunning for his maiden Grand Slam title after having made to 2 finals before the one in Melbourne on Sunday, January 26.

If you look at the form of both men, there is nothing to separate them at the moment. Sinner and Zverev dropped just 2 sets in their matches so far in the Australian Open 2025, including some big wins along the way. The defending champion and World No.1 defeated Holger Rune, and then went on to decimate Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals to stamp his authority after being relatively unchallenged in the first 3 rounds. He faced Ben Shelton in the semifinals and secured a hard-fought 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 win to extend his winning streak in Melbourne to 20.

Zverev breezed through the first 3 rounds without dropping a set as he showed his improvement across all facets on the court. He did drop one set each against Ugo Humbert and Tommy Paul in the 4th round and quarterfinal respectively, but continued his march to the semis. He was faced with the prospect of going up against 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic and had a stunning first set against the Serbian.

Djokovic had to retire due to an injury which allowed Zverev to reach the final. The German will now face the Italian World No.1 in what promises to be a thrilling clash.

“Look, I think Jannik has been the best player in the world for the past 12 months,” said Zverev, who advanced to the championship match following Novak Djokovic’s semi-final retirement, when asked about Sinner. “There’s no doubt about it. Won two Grand Slams. Has been very, very stable in those regards. So definitely one of the best players in the world.”

Sinner:

“We’ve had some very tough matches in the past. Everything can happen,” said Sinner, when asked about his thoughts on facing Zverev. “He’s an incredible player. He’s looking for his first major. There is going to be a lot of tension again, but I’m happy to play in this position. Sundays are always special days in tournaments, and I’m going to enjoy it.”
